Lucknow Super Giants vs Mumbai Indians, Eliminator
Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians entered Qualifier-2 by defeating Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator match of IPL 2023 on Wednesday night. Young fast bowler Akash Madhwal played an important role in this victory of MI, who took 5 wickets in 3.3 overs by spending just 5 runs. On the basis of this brilliant performance, he was also awarded the Player of the Match award. Madhwal made many records on the basis of his historic performance. Let me tell you, in this match, Mumbai won the toss and put 182 runs on the board while batting first, chasing this score, LSG got bundled out for 101 runs and MI won the match by 81 runs. This is the third biggest win by any team in the IPL playoffs by margin of runs.
Rohit Sharma said after the match, ‘He (Akash) was part of the team last year as a support bowler. And once Jofra Archer went in, I knew he (Akash) had the skills and character to do the job for us. Rohit Sharma further said that in the last several years young players of Mumbai Indians have made a place in the Indian team. He tries to make these young players feel special and feel that they are a part of the team.
He said, ‘Over the years, we have seen many people coming from Mumbai Indians and playing for India. It is important that we are able to make him feel special and feel that he is a part of the team. My job is just to make him comfortable in the middle of the field. MI fielding was excellent against Lucknow Supergiants. Rohit Sharma praised all his players fiercely after the match.
The captain said that in Wankhede you can win on the basis of the performance of one or two players, but in Chennai everyone’s contribution is needed. Rohit said, ‘They are very clear about their roles, what they have to do for the team and that is what you want. We enjoyed it (fielding) as a team. Nice to see everyone’s contribution on the field. Coming to Chennai, we knew that the entire team needed to come to the party. You need one or two great performances at Wankhede, but here it is different.
Batting first, Mumbai Indians had set a target of 183 runs in front of Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator match. For Mumbai, Cameron Green scored 41 runs in 23 balls with the help of six fours and a six. While bowling, Lucknow’s Naveen-ul-Haq took four wickets.
Chasing this target of Mumbai Indians, the team of Lucknow Super Giants was reduced to a score of 101. Apart from Marcus Stoinis, no batsman could even touch the figure of 20. Apart from Akash Madhwal for Mumbai, Chris Jordan and Piyush Chawla managed to take one wicket each.
After winning the Eliminator round, Mumbai Indians now have to face Gujarat Giants in Qualifier-2 to reach the finals. The winning team will face Chennai Super Kings in the final on Sunday, May 28 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
