Mumbai Indians vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, 54th Match
It was a great day for Mumbai Indians on Tuesday, May 9, as the team registered their sixth win in IPL 2023 to finish third in the points table. On this day, Mumbai Indians made two big records of IPL. Mumbai Indians created history by chasing down a mammoth target of 200 runs against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Meanwhile, two big records were made by the Mumbai team, which no other team had been able to do before.
Mumbai Indians have become the first team in the history of IPL to chase a target of 200 or more runs in three matches in a single season. Till now this record was recorded in the name of Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings, who chased the target of 200 or more runs twice in 2014 and 2018 respectively. Now Mumbai has registered this record in its name by chasing 200 runs three times. Mumbai has scored 200 runs in many matches.
Apart from this, Mumbai Indians have become the only team in the history of IPL, which has achieved the target of 200 or more runs in the least number of overs. Mumbai scored 200 against RCB in 16.3 overs. Earlier, Delhi Capitals chased 208 runs with 15 balls to spare against Gujarat Lions in 2017, but Rohit Sharma-led team and five-time IPL winner chased 200 runs with 21 balls to spare.
This 200-run chase for Mumbai Indians was unilaterally done by Suryakumar Yadav. He played an inning of 83 runs in 35 balls. Surya neither let any pacer of RCB go easily nor did any spinner get a chance to dominate. Ishaan Kishan and Rohit Sharma were definitely dismissed by Wanindu Hasaranga, but when they came in the second spell, Surya and Nehal Wadhera took notice of them and scored a lot of runs against them.
Mumbai Indians may have reached number three in the points table of IPL 2023, but the biggest concern for the team at the moment is captain Rohit Sharma himself. Rohit Sharma has not been able to show anything special in this season so far. He was dismissed for zero in two consecutive matches. In such a situation, he had a chance to make a comeback against RCB, but he was dismissed after scoring 7 runs.
Ishaan Kishan was dismissed in the last over of the powerplay. In such a situation, Rohit Sharma tried to play the ball ahead of Wanindu Hasaranga, because he wanted to avoid getting Ibw out. The ball hit Rohit’s pad and the umpire did not give him out. In such a situation, RCB called DRS. Rohit was sure that the ball would either go outside the leg stump or go over the stumps. The third umpire found that the impact of the ball is in front of the stumps and the ball is hitting the leg stump. In this way the umpire declared him out.
However, the thing to be seen here was that if we look at the length where Rohit’s ball hit, it was more than 3.5 meters and the rule says that if the impact of the ball is more than three meters from the stumps So in that case LBW will not be given and umpires call will be seen. In this case, the third umpire did not even try to measure the distance. Rohit Sharma was disappointed because of this. Later Munaf Patel and Mohammad Kaif targeted this and said that if such DRS calls are happening then it should be stopped.
Mohammad Kaif tweeted Rohit Sharma’s photo and wrote, “Hello DRS, it’s not a bit too much? How can it be out LBW?” Whereas, Munaf Patel shared a screenshot of a foreign broadcaster’s feed, in which Rohit Sharma is 3.7 meters away from the stumps, where the ball hit his pad. In such a situation, he wrote in the tweet, “Looks like DRS should also be stopped now. Unlucky Rohit Sharma. What speaks public, is it out or not?”
Whichever team would have won this match, it would have directly reached the top 4 and the Mumbai team has got this opportunity. MI registered an almost one-sided win in the high-scoring match and the team has jumped five places to enter the top 4, while RCB suffered a loss.
In this way, Mumbai has jumped five places, while Royal Challengers Bangalore were at the 7th position before the match, they have now slipped to the eighth position. Mumbai Indians are now the third team to score 12 or more points this season. Before Mumbai, Gujarat Titans (16) and Chennai Super Kings (13) have achieved.
Gujarat is first, Chennai second and Mumbai third, while fourth place is occupied by Lucknow Supergiants with 11 points in their account. After this, the team from number five to number 8 has 10-10 points in their account and all the teams have played 11 matches. Rajasthan Royals at fifth position, Kolkata Knight Riders at sixth position, Royal Challengers Bangalore at seventh position and Punjab Kings at eighth position. Everyone has 10 marks in their account.
At the same time, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals, who are at number 9 and 10 in the points table of the 16th season of IPL, have 8-8 points in their account, who have played 5-5 matches so far. These teams are also not out of the playoff qualification race, but it will be difficult for both the teams to score 16-16 points. Only after securing at least 16 marks, the path of qualification will be open. There will be a chance to qualify directly on 18 marks.
